In Reply To Gas Tank Hole...strange posted by yobobrox on May 28, 2011 at 01:02 PM

Message I think the differential didn't move, which makes a lot more sense, mainly because there is no sign of impact on the diff. Instead I think the driveshaft is the culprit and it impacted the gas tank hard enough to compress the tank upwards and crimp a hole into it above the diff.

Now, the question is why my driveshaft is able to move so much. I have two known issues that probably contributed, I also identified a third possibility. 1. Ford motor mounts, which raise the engine a bit; 2. Nismo transmission mount, which raised the trans a bit. The third issue is that my 1-pc driveshaft could not come out of the car without me dropping the rear subframe. There was pretty much no play in the driveshaft, front to rear, while the subframe and transmission were bolted up. My understanding is that the driveshaft should be able to slide into the transmission enough to remove it from the car. I can't remember what it was like when I put it on the car, but I had the subframe off then as well so I may have had the same issue and not realized it was a problem. The driveshaft itself looks fine and definitely slides into the transmission smoothly; it just looks like the driveshaft is either too long or the transmission is mounted in the wrong location, causing it to be too close to the differential. Thoughts?
